State of the Occupation: Aftermath of #OccupyOakland City Shutdown (Wednesday Roundup).

AP via The Sacramento Bee, Car hits 2 Occupy Oakland protesters:
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Two Occupy Oakland protesters have been struck by a car as they marched with a crowd.

The San Francisco Chronicle ( http://bit.ly/uzB0Ul) says an angry mob surrounded the silver Mercedes-Benz and screamed at the driver through his closed windows as first responders tended to the injured.

Bay Area Rapid Transit police Deputy Chief Daniel Hartwig says the man and woman suffered leg and ankle injuries in Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. incident on Broadway. They were taken to Highland Hospital.

BART officers guarding a nearby transit station questioned the driver and several witnesses. The driver was then allowed to leave.

Hartwig says there are differing witness accounts. Some say the driver appeared to have accelerated into the victims in frustration, and others say the driver was provoked by activists pounding on his car.
From sfgate.com:
Officers gathered information from the driver and witnesses, and now the Oakland Police Department will handle the investigation, Hartwig said.

"It was a pretty volatile situation," he said. "There is no arrest at this time, but that do0esn't mean there won't be if there's a need for an arrest."

remains unconfirmed, as far as I can tell.

I've seen reports varying from 10,000 to 40,000 people in the streets of Oakland yesterday. Let's just say that it was a lot - if there are any East Coast/West Coast rivalries still lingering from the receded souls of Tupac & Biggie, well, let's just say that Suge be smilin' tonight.

Point is - with a massive, non-violent non-cooperative mass action like this, that the only violence that occurred can be laid at the feet of the usual suspects of the police, a tiny "black bloc" of anarchists breaking windows, and one impatient motorist is pretty darned impressive. Some might say miraculous, but I won't. This is a serious movement, with serious discipline (although not immune to early morning street parties, by some accounts.)

Gandhi could have been, with clear conscience, downright gluttonous last night.

The people closed down one of the busiest ports in the United States last night, and nobody died.

#OccupyEverywhere!
